Infinite Refraction [2026]

A live cinema performance by Rotor Collective

Infinite Refraction is a live cinema performance in which light is endlessly folded into itself. Working with optical refractions under a microscope, Rotor Collective constructs a slowly evolving visual field that oscillates between the microscopic and the cosmic.

Fragments of translucent material are placed beneath the lens. Through magnification and controlled light exposure, kaleidoscopic structures emerge. What begins as a physical interaction between light and matter transforms into an expanding landscape of crystalline geometries, radiant fractures, and drifting constellations. By repeatedly zooming further into the material surface, the image approaches abstraction. Scale collapses. The micro begins to resemble the macro. What is observed under the microscope echoes imagery associated with telescopic observation: nebulae, stellar formations, cosmic dust.

The soundtrack develops as a slow, immersive composition reminiscent of the acoustic imagination of outer space. Deep resonances and sustained tonal fields create a sense of suspension, as if the audience were drifting through a vacuum where sound is felt more than heard.

Within Infinite Refraction the microscope as a scientific apparatus becomes a portal for cinematic experience. It reveals the physical reality of light interacting with matter, while simultaneously projecting speculative cosmologies.
By infinitely zooming into refraction itself, the work questions perception and scale. How stable is the distinction between inner and outer space? At what point does observation transform into projection? The performance suggests that the universe may not only exist above us, but also within the smallest fractures of light.

Infinite Refraction is made possible with the generous support of Creative Industries Fund NL.
